Iphone 4 Unable to get out of DFU

Have an iphone 4 with 4.0.2 and 1.59 bb. Wanted to udgrade to 4.2.1 with out increasing the bb. Went with redsnow 96 to put phone in DFU and then went to itunes and tried to restore with custom 4.2.1 activated. Went through all the steps and the phone seems to accept all the updates per itunes, then it says wait for the the phone to boot up and its back to restore and the phone in DFU mode again, any idea what I am not doing?
