IPhone 4S can't restore

I have an IPhone 42 on my desk wich I got from a friend, aksing me to see if I can fix it.

He told me, he tried to change the battery, after successfully doing this, the device worked ok for some time. Suddenly the phone couldn't connect to GSM (no service). He tried to restore the device using itunes, this went awry and now the device is stuck in recovery mode. Currently I can bring it in DFU mode or in recovery mode. In either mode, when I try to restore it with itunes, the restoring-process goes up to approx. 75%, then stops and itunes is telling me that there was an error (errorcode 1).

I've googled a lot about this, but I didn't find a solution , or at least confirmation about what is wrong with the device. Most people have errorcode "-1" and NOT errorcode "1". (Wich doesn't make it easier to search for ). And a lot of bollock-hints.

I KNOW that there are threads regarding similar problems here, but I didn't find a solution for it. I'm willing to provide any Information wich may needed to get it working or to confirm permanent failure of the device.

greetings,
