locked state iPhone 4 strange behaviour

What could be going on with this iphone? I checked the locked status with two unlockers, and they both found it is in locked state, to AT&T. Great, I already knew that... and it's already out of contract (over 2 years), hell, it didn't even have a contract I think.
I was using the phone with a gevey sim just fine, until the phone was updated by mistake. So there was no way to have it working again, all sims i tried were invalid.
However, I tried a T-mobile sim i purchased last year while vacationing in the US (one of those prepaid sims), and strangely it picked up the signal from a local carrier (Movistar), and i even received an sms from t-mobile welcoming me to Argentina and all the yadayada they text you when you enter another country.
So the question is, how come it can pick up the signal from this local carrier by using a "T-mobile" sim? Shouldn't it tell me that the t-mobile sim is invalid as well??

Post Your IMEI on iPhone IMEi Check Requests on Phone Unlocking Codes Section and try to activate with carrier showed or use other carrier checker of your preference
