Need Help bypassing passcode on 4s without iTunes
 

I have in my possession an Iphone 4s with a passcode, one which i do not know. I have had it for about a week.

When I turn it on it allows me to see the network, signal strength and the small bluetooth indicators etc at the top, I take it this phone isn't locked/disabled in any way?

I have tried Hooking it up to ITunes in recovery mode but all I get is 'cannot connect to update server', I installed windows XP to do this, I tried messing with the hosts file, disabling firewall etc to no avail, so I am thinking it may be a problem with me using a 3g dongle.

I called up a local phone shop who told me it would be £15 and the pass code is 'not a problem', I am reluctant to pay somebody £15 to simply use iTunes, after asking if that would be what he would use, he replied 'no, we use professional software'

My questions are. Other than iTunes or some programme that would also jailbreak the phone, what 'professional software' could he be referring to?

And does anybody know a Linux based solution which will help me? as I do not use windows.

I have no ideas which IOS version is on the phone, but when I hooked it up to iTunes it did say however, phone is up to date or something along those lines. I have a feeling it is IOS 7.x.

If all else fails i will take it to the shop but as a last resort.

Are you saying the shop will have no luck, or simply that there is no way to do what I need to with Linux?
