Exclamation [news] 6.1.3 Jailbreak Will No Longer Be Possible as Apple Patches Key Exploit

Apple has been, by its usual, diligent standards, a little slow on the mark in plugging the Evasi0n jailbreak, which was first released by the Evad3rs team at the beginning of the month. With two versions of iOS released since to counteract numerous, critical bugs – neither of which affected the untethered break – a report over at Forbes suggests Apple is working to finally come through with an iOS release to patch the various exploits which allow Evasi0n to work its magic.

Speaking with Forbes’ Andy Greenberg, David Wang – better known to us as jailbreak maestro Planetbeing – has revealed that iOS 6.1.3 beta 2, which released a couple of days back, patches at least one of the bugs exploited by the Evasi0n jailbreak. This likely spells the end of the Evasi0n jailbreak for devices pre-installed with iOS 6.1.3, and anybody on the current version of iOS 6 looking to retain their untethered jailbreak iOS 6 (or at least, the option of one) are requested to stay put, and refrain from updating their software.

The patched vulnerability pertains to the Time Zone settings, and although Planetbeing is still currently running some tests, the domino effect of having one exploit patched will have devastating effects on the Evasi0n jailbreak. As he states:

"If one of the vulnerabilities doesn’t work, evasi0n doesn’t work. . . We could replace that part with a different vulnerability, but [Apple] will probably fix most if not all of the bugs we’ve used when 6.1.3 comes out.

With several million iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices having been jailbroken since the release of Evasi0n v1.0, it has been a great ride, but before we begin lamenting the demise of the tool, Planetbeing also pointed out that it could be up to a month before such an update is released.

We will, of course, be keeping a very close eye on proceedings from here on in, but the immediate advice is not to perform any kind of update on your device on any future iOS release until an authoritative figure in the jailbreaking scene has deemed it safe to do so.

Despite Apple’s lack of urgency in issuing a patch, the fruit company still refutes the very idea of jailbreaking, and once you do update your software on the latest public version, there is currently no way of reverting back, at least none on all of the newer devices. So once again, remain cautious, and read up before you allow any update notifications to kick into action.

If you are currently on an older version of iOS and want to jailbreak your device, it is highly recommended to update iOS 6.1.2 now. You can follow our tutorials to jailbreak iOS 6.1 or jailbreak iOS 6.1.2 using Evasi0n or Sn0wbreeze.
