Yes, latest TU does not have Advanced button. But functionality is the same:
You need TU to backup shsh of the currently signed iOS by Apple. Right now, Apple only signs version 4.2.1. So if you backup shsh now, you can downgrade to 4.2.1 in the future, when Apple wouldn't allow it otherwise.
If you made backups earlier, you can downgrade to the version that was current then. When you run TU or Cydia (after jailbreak), you get your shsh saved on Cydia server. Many people don't know what they backed up, so check this with latest TU.
Please note that if you do not have a shsh backup (and it is not signed anymore by Apple), then you can NEVER install that firmware again. Not even reinstall it, if you have it currently installed. There is NO WAY around this.
Many people tell success stories "without shsh", but they just don't know what they had on backup.
DFU mode is only necessary if you cannot restore otherwise (if it crashes on every boot or so).
I hope this helps.

You don't need to post the full TU log. It's not even related to your problem.

Error 1604 means you tried to install custom firmware (created probably with snowbreeze or PwnageTool). To install this, you have to pwn your device first. You can do that with redsn0w tool.

Downgrading 3GS from 4.2.1(Need Help)

Hi, I really like your post. But i seemed to really snake bit. Have been trying for 2 days to jailbreak new Iphone. Accidentally upgraded it to 4.2.1. None of the current procedures i've run across on the net would work. Your downgrade procedure seems the most promising. However when I try the last step, I continue to get the sw imcompatibility message from Apple. The only things that bother me was this: in Tiny Umb. the all
saved Shshs report that the firmware is iphone 3G not 3GS. And when i saved the 4.0.1 fw did not receive a confirmation message, though it appeared successful.
Itunes vers. 10.1.1.4
Tiny Umbrella vers. 4.21.02

You don't need to try any longer. If TinyUmbrella says it has no shsh backups for *your* 3GS except 4.2.1, then you cannot downgrade. Never.

Make sure you backup shsh from now on.

iPhones 3G can always be downgraded, even without shsh, but to install a firmware 4.0 or higher, iTunes will check shsh now for 3G also. But you still can install that firmware by other tools.
