Unlock 3GS on 4.2.1 - GSM-Forum

Have a friends Iphone 3GS.

He has updated to 4.2.1 via Itunes.

Would the following guide work

Guide to jailbreak/unlock iOS 4.2.1/4.1 using redsn0w | Geekword

Has not upgraded baseband yet.

Keep on reading about old bootroom and new bootroom. Has this got any relevance to unlocking the 3GS?

Also read about saving SHSH files. Has this any relevance?

As dont want to attempt before knowing if these 2 things have any relevance

HAving SHSH Backup is very important, what is the baseband of that 3Gs? If you iPhone is MC model its New bootroom& if its MB Model=Old bootroom, if its New boot & you JB it using Redsn0w it will be Tethered, if you baseband is:05.14 ,05.15 & above you have to upgrade baseband to 06.15 to unlock it.

is the easiest way to find out if MB or MC by going into DFU mode and doing the following or is there a simpler way?

The baseband is 05.15.04 so il have to upgrade baseband which i knew i would have to and happy in doing

The process above didnt work as does not show iboot.

My serial number is MC but 3rd,4th and 5th numbers are 931

Does that mean old or new bootroom as when the phone was on prev version before he upgraded it was fine. he did not have to connect to PC all the time. it was jailbroken then as well. Does bootroom only matter as he has upgraded now?

what do i do get the phone unlocked? If new or old, do i follow the same procedure as above for both?

Is the procedure same for Oldbootroom and new bootroom?

when the phone was 3.1.3 i did not have to connect to pc when i switched off. so does that mean it must be old bootroom as was jailbroken at that time or does new/old bootroom only matter when you upgrade to IOS 4?
