Hello

I have been reading the threads, but am lost. I have an:

iPhone 3GS
Version: 3.1.3
Modem Firmware: 05.12.01

Can I jailbreak it?
Can I unlock it?
Can I upgrade to a newer OS BEFORE an unlock?
Can I upgrade to a newer OS AFTER an unlock?

Answers::

1. Yes, use Spirit to jailbreak.
2. Yes, after jailbreak u can unlock it using Cydia.
3. Yes, u can unlock it till the version 4.0.1.
4. No, for now dont update it to higher then 4.0.1.

Thanks for the replies.

So basically I should update to version 4.0.1, jailbreak and then unlock the phone.

iTunes only allows me to upgrade to 4.0.2, how do I go about getting the 4.0.1 update?

Try to put ur iphone in DFU mode n then restore it with 4.0.1...

I don't get how to restore it. I have the ipsw file from:
iClarified - iPhone - Where To Download iPhone Firmware Files From

How do I get it on the phone so that I can then unlock?

I would advice u to simply use SPIRIT to jailbreak ur iphone n then unlock it by ultrasn0w through cydia.

OK I'll answer my own question:

Shift+click restore in itunes

OK Now I have a jailbroken iphone 3gs

How do I go from 3.1.3 to 4.0.1?

I have modified my host file to include:
74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com

But Shift-clicking the restore button in itunes says:

"The iphone could not be restored. The device isn't eligible for the requested build".
