The only way to boost signal reception is to make the internal antenna longer. Some people just solder a piece of tinfoil to where the antenna is attatched. But the best way would be to calculate what length you need by whatever frequency you are using, then solder a wire that length to the antenna in your phone, without it touching anything else metal inside. Use tape or similar spacer to hold the antenna together, and away from other electronics in the phone.

As far as using the Wlan to make calls, I don't know, haven't tried it.
