It's so easy to "loose" the good settings of one's device... It has happened to me too, while testing many v9 NCs with the MB kernel. Now I cannot use the Europe map, while North America 2GB works fine... Fortunately I do not really need MB, but it's still frustrating. Should be my CF card to blame...

Anyway, I could release a dsa update with a 12MB swap file (instead of 8MB for 32MB devices) and a longer initial delay of 120 seconds (instead of 90), so that all could benefit from the results obtained by ahkp3 on a 32MB device (eventually with the swappiness increased to 70 instead of the default 60).

New: Swap size increased to 12MB for devices with 32MB of RAM.

Devices with 64MB of RAM work well with 16MB of swap, in that almost all swap is used. There shouldn't be any reason why devices with 32MB of RAM could not use the same amount of swap, so 12MB seems a step in the right direction.
I have also set the delayed MB start to 120 seconds, to let NC advance further, at normal speed.

It doesn't work on my 930 (64MB). I do a clean install using dsa with 9430 navcore and MB ticked. The device freeze during boot up process.

Well, the MB kernel is actually a v8 kernel which does not fit hardware which needs all features of a v9 kernel.
Until TT releases a v9 kernel source, if ever, do not use MB, yet.

Lightbulb DSA 9.430 with 12 MB swapfile on 32MB device

Thanks for the link. I already tried that, no luck.

TTS works absolutely fine out of the box on my One v1 with DSA 8.550 in 35-XL emu and the cabinet-files for each TTS-voice loaded directly from TomTom. All this even my TomTom ONE was never officially supported for TTS. I also tried DarkMireilles Patch and the 9.430GO cab. In addition to that I tested every iteration of reset, clearflash, deleting settings.dat etc., still no luck. I will go forward and try a couple of 9 SE fullbackups to see if somehow TTS comes back alive in a Navcore 9 and go on from there.

Do you think, that starting with the 9.x Navcores somehow there is an additional check within the Navcore regarding TTS or other features? Maybe the Navcore now checks the HWid, DeviceID or serial# and limits the functions accordingly?

I did report that the feature "TTSLoquendo700" is now listed under unsupportedfeatures in the ttgo.bif, but I was mistaken. With emu 35-XL it lists this and a couple of other features again as supported. As not all 35-XL had TTS straight out of the box (serial# starting with RX... came with TTS, while serial# RS... did not), maybe there is a an additional check now.

Regarding the new DSA with 12 MB swapfile. Beware that using any swapfile larger than 12 usually crashes the system on a 32MB device, just becauses the memboost script "shakes" the system soo much then. Therefore I can't recommend going up further for 32MB devices.

DSA Navcore 9.430LE (other than TTS) works really great on a 32 MB device and results in about 16-17 MB of free RAM once the script exits. During Navigation free RAM is usually around 6-9 MB. Even RDS-TMC (USB latest version) is fully supported and works great.

I will keep posting back how things evolve.

Regards,
ahkp3

Opps, I missed that. Could this be the reason that TTS does not work anymore with Navcores 9.xxx on old 32MB devices that did not have TTS enabled out of the box?

Any chance of bypassing this just one time for an experiment?

Yes, easily. Immediately after patching rename PNDNavigator.clean to PNDNavigator .
But it won't help probably, even worse, you may loose sound entirely.

There is nothing extra for LoquendoTTS: just replace the whole directory with LoquendoTTS.zip, and try a factory reset (save your favorites first, MAP/mapsettings.cfg). It's also possible that not all modes support loquendo; for sure the GO modes (18, 25, 24) do.

And yes, a too big swap file leads to restarts, even on 64MB devices. That is why I have halved the swap size to 8MB for 32MB devices...

Thanks, DSA8310! That did the trick.

Simply renamed the file and TTS works now straight out of the box like a charm with downloaded TTS-voices in cabs from TomTom. No patching, clear flash, reset, etc. necessary. As I said, just out of the box on an initially non-TTS enabled TomTom device without any further tampering. Just like good old DSA 8.550 with "35-XL".

Summing up for the robots...

Problem:
No TTS (text-to-speech) on DSA Navcore 9.430 with memboost enabled
TTS voices are shown in the menu but simply remains silent

Device details:
DeviceName=TomTom One
DeviceVersionHW=ONE (v2)
running DSA 9.430 with setting "35-XL;35-XL" only, no other emulation in the reskin file

Solution:
Simply rename the PNDNavigator.clean to PNDNavigator

Terrible...
So there is a problem with the sound patching!?

Could you please choose the self skin (either initially or with the skin chooser) while using the PNDNavigator.clean NC? Is then LoquendoTTS still working?
If the answer is no, then this is why the sound patching to self breaks TTS.

If this is the case, I will mention it in the help, the fact that there are some devices which won't have sound without the sound patching to self, while others need both sound and skin patched to a higher mode in order to get computer voices.

It is very much possible to make the sound patching independent from the skin patching, but this would add to the confusion. I don't think that there are devices which would need a certain sound mode, different from both Self and the supported skin mode(s).

People interested in checking out such special occurrences should remember that file dsa.app/Contents/Resources/Java/firmware/scan.c is the source for the program which can hard-wire a desired sound mode to a normal/clean PNDNavigator under any operating system - Windows, Linux, MacOS, and it has the following syntax:

$ scan <PND> <mode>

where <PND> is the path to a copy of PNDNavigator.clean (generated by dsa, say, in some directory on PC), and <mode> is the desired numeric sound mode (e.g. 35 for mode 35-XL).

scan should be compiled with gcc using a command line like:

$ gcc -O2 scan.c -o scan

Under Windows, such compilation could be performed under Cygwin easily.

<PND> should finally be installed under name PNDNavigator on TT.

...
I might have to add a check box to the dsa GUI in order to make sound patching to Self optional.

LoquendoTTS on GO920 (64MB) = no problems.
LoquendoTTS on GO300 (32MB) = No PNDNavigator.clean to PNDNavigator rename does not work LoquendoTTS.

If I use "swap" with NavCore 8398 (truck), the physical button is disabled on / off the device and not be turned off.
Tested on GO 920 and GO 300.

It should work on a Go300, one of the devices in my test group is presumeably the same.

Could you please check the following:
- please post "DeviceName=" and "DeviceVersionHW=" from an unaltered ttgo.bif from your device.
- create a new DSA from the 9.430LE cab with memboostoption ticked and only skin "35-XL" selected.
- download the tts voices of your choice from the following links:
Code:

- Then extract the contents of the voice into the LoquendoTTS folder on your device. There should be no files to be overwritten, just integrating folders.

- At last, rename the PNDNavigator.clean file to PNDNavigator (without a file extension).

- No further tampering, just a cold boot with the drums necessary.

As for DSA8310s' requests I am still working on them, but nothing changed regarding my previous findings so far. I will post them soon.
