i got a tom-tom , it is showing showing red cross sign ,i formatted it then connect to tom tom home software and update it. now it is on but showing no maps.I want to know how can i add or install uk maps in it for free .
actually i am totally new to this . plz any good guide for this.
model as shown in connection is TOM TOM ONE 3RD EDITION

Do a Google search for FastActivate or check this forum for it, as an alternative I think TT Asperin is posted a bit further down.
As a general rule you need something to activate the map, something to patch the Navcore and of course a suitable map.
The current 870 maps are already posted, so one problem solved.
There are charts that show what Navcore supports the different maps, one source for a good chart is here :

Before you start make sure you have a ttgo.bif file in the root of your device, if not start the TT until it complains about the map and shut down.
If that does not work install the map first (see below) but don't use any tool yet!
Restart with the map on it and try if you can get into the menu, shut down again - now there should be a ttgo.bif file present.

Currently you have the original Navcore installed, that only gives you support for basic maps.
Download a compatible map (check with the chart!), and a suitable tool for the patching and activating as mentioned earlier.
The map files must be installed in a folder on the device/SD card, so if they are already in a folder (in the downloaded archive) you extract the whole folder to the root.
If there are only a lot of files in the archive you extract them into a folder on your device/SD card.
Start FastActivate and click the button on the left, when all done click the next button for the map.
For an original Navcore you now have to hit the third button to patch it.
For TT Asperin follow the instructions in the thread.

Now you should be able to use your new map.
If you want to try a newer Navcore with support for features like ALG and IQ Routes check this thread.
