i guess it is possible but you need to port mxkey soft to ps3 OS or run windows on ps3 without any type of emulation cause that'll reduce performance.
one thing that is needed to consider is the vga card, how many stream processes(SIMP) could it handle?
just looked info on its vga card, its not that powerfull compared to newest, it even uses Gddr3 and the recomended ones have gddr5.

None of these is neeed. All you need is to separate software used to calculate code from mx-key which is what competition did. You read log with box/software and start calculation using external software. Since original PS3 was able to run Linux without a problems it wouldn't be hard to do. PS3 might not be as fast in calculations as 2 5970 but connected in clusters could be a better performace/price solution that consumes less power.

Of course it IS possible but it's CELL CPU that does the calculations in that case not the GPU. Only the old PS3 with Linux could be used and since military uses clusters based on PS3 for their own calculations it could be used here as well.

I'm insterested if it's even worth trying on PS3 and how fast/slow it is compare to GPU with same price range.

not possible, yellow dog linux dont have acces to all instructions needed for use aceleration. only can acces to one cell core. the only chance you have is modifi folding@home for connect with mxkey if you can defeat the hypervisor

Who said you have to use yellow dog one. You can use other distributions that have access to 6 of 6 cores. It's a matter of proper configuration and software.
