Solution: How to Fix Fighter/Cruiser Smart Card Problem!

Edited by Lead: This topic is now obsolete due to the Cruiser installer which handles potential smart card service issues automatically. Many thanks to Muppet and Invisible for their contribution to the smartcard problem solution.

FINALLY!

After reading about so many people with Fighter Smart Card problems, I spent quite a long time stuffing around with my laptop, breaking the smart card stuff and getting it to work again.

This solution tries to address the problem of the Smart Card service not starting correctly as is what causes Fighter to fail. It is somewhat similar to a post by Invisible he made a few months earlier, which you can view here.

Note: This is only for Windows XP or Windows 2000. I can't help with Windows 98. Get in the real world people!

Ok, so if when you put your dongle in it's red light flashes and you can see it in Device Manager, but when you run Fighter it doesn't work (or crashes) then please try this. It has worked for me and I've tested it on two PCs! I'm sure it'll work for you too!!

This proves the Fighter Software is fine, it's Windows that has problems with the Smart Card Services that causes 99% of the "It Doesn't Work" problems I see posted here.

Here's the steps to fix it:

1) Open up a command prompt (Start -> Run -> type in 'cmd' and press enter)

2) Type in this: regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\scardssp.dll
Press return and click on "Ok" with the box that pops up.

3) Type in this: scardsvr reinstall
Press return. You'll get no message.

4) Rename the attached file from fix.txt to fix.reg and double click on it. When it asks if you want to install the settings say yes!

5) Go to Start->Settings->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services. Double Click Services.
In the list you now see, find the Service called "Smart Card" (not Smart Card Helper) and right click on it. Select "Properties" and left click. When the box opens up, change the "Startup Type" to automatic. Click on "Apply" then on "Ok"

6) Reboot Your PC! Do not try to "test" Fighter before doing this step!

Your Fighter should now work perfectly!

Please post here and tell me how you went. I tried this on two PCs and got it work, so I'm sure you can get Fighter to work for you doing this.

Tim aka muppet.

What Operating System are you using? All the information I have tells me Smart Card Services are installed by default in Windows XP and Windows 2000

EDV11: Good to hear, you must have the Smart Card Service running somewhere. With all my testing, if that service isn't running (or is stopped) Fighter will either just not work or will crash on startup.

doggo: If the file appears in wordpad that's fine. Just save the file as fix.reg and execute it. All it does is put a couple of settings in the registry.

I'll give it a try, all I'm waiting for now is the activation code, I've managed to get everything installed on one of my machines (just waiting for the codes) but thats the backup machine, it's my main machine thats the problem. hopefuly this will sort things out.
