what is the difference between red and brown?

Can someone tell the difference between red and brown phones and when a phone is converted to brown if any functionality is lost?
should we convert back to red after unlock?

Brown is code for developer. Red is code for production unit.

There is no functionality difference, but some people prefer to return the phone to Red when returning it to the customer so it is back to production state as SE would leave it.

Search, if we were to tell you it would only be repeating what has been stated many times on this board. Search.

Red color means a normal phone, brown color stands for a developer phone, blue color usually means a phone in an unfinished state.
