how to perform jump

sorry i am completely new and i posted a thread asking for help and someone did but they gave me a diagram of a "jump" but i do not understand how and what to do and i was hoping that someone can explain because i haven't seen a "total newbie faq"

the only jump i know of is of pins covered in a motherboard(bios) or optical drive(master/slave/auto)

is this question so complicated that nobody can respond? i'm thinking its done with a piece of copper wire (although i don't know where i would be able to find one so thin, so maybe paperclips would work?) touching the points? and i'm assuming the unit has to be on? but not sure which ribbon (iphone) supplies power to the board

a little help, please?
