How To Root Android - Flash Custom Recovery First

If you have the intention to root your Android smartphone, there are lots of technical facts you should learn before stepping to root your Android device. Here I am going to explain the custom recovery which is really essential when you try to root your device flashing root binaries instead of one-click rooting apps.

Root Acess Via Flashing Method

Technically, there are two ways to root your Android smartphone. Either you can use one-click rooting application or flash root binary files in custom or stock recovery to gain root access. Although users prefer one-click rooting tools since it is really easy to use, the flashing method is the technically recommended method to have root access. Whatever the tool it does not matter, as all the rooting efforts are not officially recommended. But it also does not seem that Android users have become discouraged with not having the official permission as they are always ready to use unofficially ways bearing the risk of rooting

How To Root Your Android Device Using Recovery Method

Initially, you have to download the correct custom recovery image for your device and flash it on your device via fastboot commands. Currently, TWRP custom recovery is the most popular custom recovery among Android users and developers. here are the basic steps to install the TWRP recovery image on an Android device
  • First, visit the official site of Team Win who works as the developers of Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP)
  • Download the correct recovery image for your device on your Windows computer
  • Enable USB debugging mode on your Android device and unlock the device bootloader
  • Download and Install ADB and fastboot drivers on your computer
  • Open the folder which you downloaded the recovery image
  • Press Shift + Right-click on the inside of the folder
  • Then, you will get a menu and select "Open command window here" option
  • You will get a command prompt window on your computer screen
  • Then, connect your Android device to the computer and type adb reboot bootloader in the command window to boot your device into fastboot/bootloader mode
  • Tap on the “Allow USB debugging” on your Android device if available
  • Next, type fastboot flash recovery command along with the name of your recovery image file
  • Finally, type fastboot reboot in the command window to boot your device back to normal

Now, you have flashed a custom recovery on your device and you can boot your device into recovery mode by using the specific button combination. Now, you can download the root binary file on your device directly and flash it on the device itself using custom recovery options. If you are going to use CF-Auto-Root as you rooting solution check https://odindownload.com/root-android/ for more details

Final Word

Make sure to have a back up of stock recovery before flashing a custom recovery since you cannot receive OTA updates while running on custom recovery. You can have a complete back up of your stock recovery by flashing the TWRP image files on your device temporarily. For that, boot your device into fastboot mode using the fastboot commands and type fastboot boot (path to TWRP file). Then the device will boot into recovery mode and you can back up the stock recovery and kernel using the backup option and find backup content in your device SD card when needed.
