buds is always posting to fast
our new aircondition (installed last monday) failed and 8 HD5970 cards died because of this and now again 3 because of overheating..
i was so angry about it, that i sayed to buds that i will shutdown the servers and but it in the trash... what was buds making? ... he posting that servers a closed now...

but, maybe we change our system to another one.. i dont know for now i need some test, i have a good idea.

just use watercool solution... no a/c need it or at least system will not fail because of heat.
I though Austria was cooler than Spain in this time of year.

for real, watercooling is not optional on high level systems... you do not need 1 pump for each system, even thou it is a good idea to have individual watercooling solutions.
I tried with 1 big pump and 1 big car radiator.... but water pressure was too big. and radiator's fan was loader than anything I had before.

in those kind of systems, it is better to allways put fresh cold air instead of trying to cool the warm air inside the room.

cold air enter from ground floor, and warm air is extrated out from the ceiling level. (remember hot air goes up)

Maybe we move our Server in a mobile ice-cool truck
and we can offer a mobile sl3 unlock service...

shure is okay.. just little bit less speed, but we already ordered new cards!
when we have the cards, we are back on our old fast calculation speed...
you see the time counter before you upload (its now more then normal, but will be solved and maybe more faster).

no, it was not the problem..
i using 2 airconditions, opened cases and no overclocking but down volting to drive the cards in save ranges for 24/7 work.

temps are okay by 50c to 85c.
i often check temps and condition of servers.
iam working now on some automatic protection system..

i never seen any problem of temps, but now i know what happend with the cards and way they all died!

its the fan motor!
if the cards runs with stock cooler and stock fan motor at 100% all the time, the motors sometimes begins blocking for short time...
they make realy bad laud nois before the totaly block and when this
happend the card totaly overheating and system is not shuting down the card...
i always taugt that cards shooting down atleast when they reach more then 100c.
but it isnt so.. they just runs and runs till they totaly burns and die.

normaly when then fan motor begins to die, you can hear it already at startup, but in our server room there is so mutch noise from airconditions, fans, routers and switches and the clusters it self, that you cant hear when a fan motor die.
and when the motor block the card totaly fast overheating.

now i will install another cooler to all cards..

watercooling is not possible for me..
this are many cards wich need all waterblocks and radiators and pumps..
its already not mutch space anymore in the server room and it cost mutch money.
arctic cooling fans are the best choise togetter with aircondition.
all cards working at good 55c at full load, thats totaly okay and dont need mutch space.. one cooler cost about 80€.
all cards with this cooler installed, still working since first day..

all cards wich are died are all with stock cooler...

ps: today only 1 card recaived... hope to get fast more cards to bring back the old clusters wich are
now offline from the clustersystem.



PS 2:
somebody knows how to read fan speed from the cards?
i whant to scan the fan speed (RBM) and temps all the time via my server software and make
some protection for it.
i think this will shure solve the problem also with stock coolers..
if a fan motor stuck, the rbm going down and if it is under some level, the server will send me a sms
or email alert und shutdown itself.

I know there is an api call to read fan speed, but it would be faster and easier to check temp. oclhashcat already has a max temp security shutdown.
artic cooling is good, I give you that.... but as they are also motor driven they can also fail if run at 100% 24/7
this is a wake up call... computers can be run without problem 24/7 but the little things (fan, water pumps) HAVE TO BE CHECKED for faults every once in a while.
I am sure that it is costing you more to replace 4 cards than it would have changing the stock fans or install watercooling.
Maintenance is one the little things nobody thinks about until is too late. Like an insurance policy, it better to have it and not need it than to need it and dont have it.
