Problem is caused by light leaking from LCD, not from light above. The tape trick will work, however you must remove all previous glue.

Ideally you should use a foam surround like the picture on page 1.

The 4S comes with one of these standard now, which only further proves this theory.

Just use electric tape. Cut 4 small strips and put them around proximity sensor. Do not cover the sensor just around it. I will try to post pictures. 1000% work. Tested by me..

We should find a way to test this sensor in having a call while he's disassembled because it's painful to teardown again and again...

The last i4/4s i've repaired make me sick with this proximity sensor.

Would the sticker sold on our famous auction shop fix every time this breakdown ?

My solution always works.
What I do is use some frosted tape such as this:
http://3.bp.********.com/-CIPH5nxoIe...magic+tape.jpg
Cut a little piece of tape to cover both the holes for the proximity sensor.
Once covered, used a black marker such as a sharpie to color the tape.
Put back together. Test with voice memos and you're good

Hi, all (SOLVED)

I have the same problem after changing lcd of iphone 4, tried everything, change new lcd ,new power flex with sensor, square adhesive, put doble uv filter, put black tape on backlight upper part so that no light will leak from back light to sensor, same problem, then i give up and convince owner to use the phone like this without turning off the lcd while on call or audio recorder, i want to try to reset but will take time owner in a hurry so as last try i tried to:
!!!!!RESET ALL NETWORK SETTING!!!!!! And the phone works then charged the customer a little higher because i solve also the sensor problem

I hope this will help somebody

This solution is very strange with network settings....what is the involving of network settings in this ? i am sure that you made it before this reset and works but you checked only after reset...i had lots of iphones with this problem and it was none that i can`t fix ...and without this reset

regards

Yes i know its strange, as i had explained i already check and tried all and its not working i called and convince the customer to use it like this because hes in hurry, while waiting for customer i want to try other solution as suggested and done by genius in apple, which is to setup as new phone , reset phone, and reset network setting, i dont have enough time to do a complete reset so i tried the easiest and fastest which is " RESET NETWORK SETTING " and the sensor works just in time before the customer arrived and we are both happy that i solve all problems.

I think the sensor calibration is somehow disturb by disconnecting and testing other sensor, and by reseting network setting it recalibrate the sensor to correct value and it works, Thats why since this is easy and fast way to check or correct sensor problem give it a try and leave comments here if it work also for you so that we can help other with same problem, and avoid painfull assembly and disassembly just to check this sensor.
