iPhone 3GS audio IC and iPhone 4 audio IC are exactly the same.
iPhone 4S has different audio IC.

Any time touch to any IC that will be a risky and no time for regret because it was already done… Just think twin or more before attempt to do that if you don’t have a right tool.
As my opinion, if you have a chance put the board to other good phone try let see exactly problem happen the same ?
If it sounds normal then check the dock charger, if it was contacted to liquid, some pins including pins for sound function already got short, just replace new one;
If you have replaced a front camera or replace a new headphone flex, you must remove the screw for wifi antenna on right side of headphone jack, make sure headphone jack sit tire on metal frame… if you see the bottom of headphone jack is lift up so some resistor on back side of headphone was short with metal frame… Try to cut a space on metal frame below headphone a little bigger that let all resistors away from metal.
All those can help with no sound on ear piece during phone call or sound became buzzing or not loud even you turn volume to max level while louder speaker is still working good.
I don’t have too much tools, so that way was help me most all iphone 4s in my work shop with no sound on ear piece because it believe IC on iphone 4S is not easy defected like on iphone 4. If you don’t want to lose it, try this let see you would be lucky like me ?
