iPhone 4S restore error -1

Hi guys,

I have this iPhone 4S which I bought from e bay. The previous owner said it got dropped and the screen got broken and hence he sold the logicboard.

Once I received the board I connected the board with a battery and installed a screen just to get a preliminary of how the logicboard behaves. However I found out that the touch function is not working. I though let's try a restore to 5.0.1 stock and at the end of the restore process the itunes throws an error, the code is -1.

I think this relates to the baseband not being updated, however I can't find any real help on this error. I'm also thinking that the touch is not working due to the phone is being frozen trying to search for signal therefore the phone is out of resources to let the touch function work.

Anyone has any idea what I could diagnose more or maybe a possibility to create a custom firmware for iPhone 4S without baseband update?

Have you taken a look at the restore log?

It's found in:

%AppData%\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Updater Logs

And sort the folder by date, highest first

it does not work if your baseband chip is damaged(but i think you might be lucky)

here the fix as when itunes restore it gets the ssh from the apple by the gs.apple.com and gets he 2 api ticket in ios5xx one for the firmware and another for the baseband so if your phone gets a aaple logo nad get filled upto the 90% and then error comes then it means that the api ticket for the baseband was not retrieved which could be due to the server problem ,

hence u must try the ipsw 5.0.1 9A406 this will help you in updatig your baseband .

also you must check the host file in windows>system32>driver>etc>host

open this file with notepad as admin and then check the gs.apple.com Xx.xx.xx.xx does not have this so ther put # before that.

try it and post result

I already tried to remove the gs.apple.com from the hosts file.

However take a look at the restore log and you can see the error. I suspect that the problem is within the baseband of the phone as I was able to restore another 4S on 5.0.1 9A406 firmware without any errors

Code:
update_baseband: requesting baseband firmware data
update_baseband: received data from host (11169110 bytes)

bbupdater: END(kBBUReturnIOError): Perform stage at second

is your restore to 5.0.1 9a406 was successful ???

if not then use bbupdaterextreme.exe and connect your phone in the
dfu mode and thus upadte your baseband manualy more through the
beta one 9B5141a (beta 3) having baseband 1.5.04

Yeah I have heard of the bbupdater it's the command tool that Apple use to invoke baseband commands. Where can you download this tool and how do you use it?

No, haven't been able to test more. However in the coming days I will try to update it to 5.1.1 and check whether it will work. 99.9% will not work as the problem is in the baseband ic.

The only solution I think is to remove ic and reball it but first I will take a good look at the ic maybe there are some cracks or something.

Thanks limespirit for repling back. I suspected the same, problem with ic. I just need to find the time and equipment to investigate the baseband chip problem. I'll let you know the outcome.
