iPhone 5S sensor always on!

Hi guys, for some reason my iPhone 5S's ambient light sensor glows red when my iPhone screen is off. It stops glowing when the screen is on. It's the light right next to the speaker on the front screen. This started happening after I dropped my phone in water.

Is there any way to turn this sensor off and if not, is it dangerous to remove the sensor from the phone? It's draining my battery life pretty fast. Thanks!

I have DFU restored from iOS 7.1.2 to 8.0.2 to 8.1 and it's still the same. I guess I have choice but to replace that flex cable.
