Member: 1970634 Status: Offline Thanks Meter: 1 | Again: "Setup Error! -f" - Explanation and Solution! recently I can accross my old RIFF Box V1 and wanted to use the 14trial offer. But with latest 1.86 installer I got the famous "Setup Error! -f" right after stating the file... Using the 1.76 zipped files it works... So this all is NOT and RiffboxManager Software issue.. This is all about an Unicode UTF-8 problem that somehow occured especially with some Version of Installersoftware "InstallForge" (which is used for RIFF Software) before InstallForge version 1.3.2! For instance - Installer RiffSetup v1.48 works (if used in compatibility mode Win7). This uses an older version of InstallForge which did not have that issue.... This all seams to happen not on every System. But it looks like that especially systems are affected that has been upgraded from Win7 to Win10... But do not know exactly... You can check following folder while trying to install RIFF 1.86 C:\Users\<YOUR USER>\AppData\Local\Temp During install InstallForge creates a new temp folder with chineese signs (!) and somehow the system cannot read that temp folder and the installtion breaks with "Setup Error! -f" Strage is that an fresh Win10 or Win7 (not upgraded) installation do NOT have that issue... So all in all I did not found the real reason why this happens... But there are two solutions! :-)
h**ps://imgur.c*m/a/WF2zcBe (cannot post links completely - pls corrent the link by yourself) I know: This all seams to much hassle for it. But I like to know what happens if an error occurs :-) Again: This is not an RIFF Box Software issue itself. Its about the installer software... This all happens also for some older software which were made with InstallForge... Happy Riffing :-) |

Member: 1970634 Status: Offline Thanks Meter: 1 | If you go with "use unicode utf-8 for worldwide language support" for installation deselect this again after your installation (and reboot). Otherwise this could break other things which are connected to Unicode and ASCII charaters... Last edited by DJManiac; 06-30-2019 at 08:12. |

Member: 1970634 Status: Offline Thanks Meter: 1 | Dang! I guess I found by coincidence the real reason why on some maschines the "Setup Error! -f" error occurs! Check your regedit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\FileSystem NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation - Set to 1 or 0 (Standard is 0) Some SSD “optimization” programs change this to 0 to reduce some load to SSD. If this is 1 for you change it to 0. But note that Win10 uses then the the old 8.3 short-names again which have an influence on generel file handling preformance. support .microsoft .com/en-us/help/121007/how-to-disable-8-3-file-name-creation-on-ntfs-partitions (without spaces) No reboot required. Setup works again without "Setup Error! -f" :-) I don't want to miss it, to share this with you all - even if that doesn't interest anyone :-) Last edited by DJManiac; 05-07-2020 at 17:42. |
