The best way is to know the history of the phone by asking the owner.
If the phone just died suddenly without flashing/rooting there is a very good chance it is a hardware problem.
If the owner flashed a wrong ROM or bad flash /Root and the phone never turned back on then it should be fixable with Riff Box.

I know on certain models like the S3 (USA) a bricked phone will show certain signs like when connecting the phone to the computer without the battery the phone shows Red LED light , and you can hear the "connecting" sound.
But this is not a reliable way to determine... The best is to get information from the owner.
Also there comes a time when you know your wires and soldering are correct (power... Riff box Settings are all good and tested ) and that you have done many models before but you continue to get Riff Box errors on the phone then it is a hardware problem.
