Hello.

Your phone has firmware with new type of Security. To unlock the phone You should root it, then perform "Read Codes"/"Unlock" operation via ADB.

So no way to downgrade and unlock whilst keeping knox intact?

Unlocking via ADB requires phone to be rooted.
On your own risk You can try to write older firmware, or only it's modem via "Advanced Mode" option of "Write Firmware" operation, then make "Read Codes"/"Unlock" operation via Modem Port.

Also You can use Factory Unlock service.
