Even if the phone have operator brand, you not need flash the phone before unlocking, but In case you are getting a second hand phone with a cooked Rom inside or a rooted phone, you have to flash it to original state first.
Also after unlocking your phone with the clip, you can remove operator branding by yourself If on the links i posted a Rom for your device.
If some one know more links for original Roms, please post here

Here all mango htc shipped ROMs...
The ROMs build number is 7720.68 - the final RTM build.

Gold - FileFactory Folder view - Gold
Mozart - FileFactory Folder view - Mozart
Mondrian - FileFactory Folder view - Mondrian
Spark - FileFactory Folder view - Spark
Schubert - FileFactory Folder view - Schubert
