Editing network names on SIM

I understand that the names of known networks are stored on the SIM card, but these names vary depending on the SIM card issuer. For example, a SIM card issued by Orange UK would label 234-33 as "Orange" and would label 208-01 as "Orange F". On the other hand, a SIM card issued by Orange France would label 234-33 as "Orange UK" and would label 208-01 as "Orange". The country suffix is often excluded for networks in the home country of the SIM card.

Is it easy to edit these network names on the SIM card and change the names from those originally chosen by the SIM card issuer? I've looked for software to do this, but all I can find is software to edit the preferred network list, which I can already do using an old handset.

It is possible for example with a SIM update. After Orange UK and T-Mobile UK merged, the two separate networks remained under a unified parent company with free national roaming between the two networks, but Orange UK sent SIM updates to its customers which changed the label for 234-30 on the SIM from "T-Mobile" to "Orange T-Mobile".
