EProm ?prepaid credit on display clone

Could someone confirm this for me.On prepaid sim card, if phone credit is on display after you enter a code. eg *#xxx# does this mean that credit is stored on the phone or sim, or does does the operator have the balance.
I have an old prepaid system where my phone displays credit left after i put in a code.

If this is the case, what does this mean in terms of cloning and use of call credit.

Does it mean credit can be put on phone when cloning card??

Any help most appreciated

Thanks

credit is controlled by network operator and not stored on sim, if it was stored many people would be foning for free!
