New ZTE T12 code problem - GSM-Forum

I have a customer who has bought the unlock code of me for a Telstra locked T12.
They say when they insert a non Telstra sim card and enter the code after the 8 digit, the screen turns off. When they tried again it only had space for 8 digits & an error message to enter some 8 digit number.
No other error messages to indicate number of attempts. Screen just went blank.
Any suggestions from people who have unlocked the T12 by code ?

I now suspect it is asking for the PUK code and not the unlock code.

Be sure what the phone asks. Unlock code is 12 digits
