must have read wrong instructions although the *#7284# AND the *#9090# DID work-i have now done a hard reset and now neither of them work. the correct combination is: ##3424# (works)

Go to Menu, Settings, Applications, Development and check "USB Debugging"
Plug in USB Cable to Phone.
Bring up the dial pad and enter ##3424#
Select CDMA Modem
Select Qualcom USB Setting
Select DM + Modem + ADB
Select OK
Scan and Flash normally.

serial port is visible but cannot connect to it. anyone ever done one of these w success?

I got it connected with ADB debug OFF

##3424#
Select CDMA Modem
Select Qualcom USB Setting
Select DM + Modem + ADB
Select OK

Also a Micro-UART cable works too with a 500K resister between pins 5 and 6 (gnd)

To get the SPC first make sure you are not on v4.0.4 cuz there's a bug in it, higher or lower version is fine.
Then with ADB debug ON type ##3282# enter a bogus SPC like 000000
then in command prompt type:

adb shell getprop ril.MSL

Good luck!
