Change IMEI on Samsung i9000 - GSM-Forum

I have recently purchased a Samsung i9000 (Galaxy S), also known as the Vibrant on the T-Mobile network. I was curious on how, if possible, I could change the IMEI number on the phone.

My mobile provider checks IMEI numbers against their database for data plan service. If the IMEI registers as a smartphone, the customer is required to pay outrageous data service charges. But if not, you could save a lot of $$$.

I would appreciate somebody's advice on how I could change my IMEI number on this phone. Thanks in advance.

There were some discussion in another forum where a member figured out how to change the IMEI number, but didn't want to reveal the method publicly.

Bump, any advice? I hear the IMEI is stored in the nv_data.bin file. Can it be changed/edited with a HEX editor?

Could I flash my phone and corrupt the IMEI number? That way the service provider will not recognize the phone as an i9000.

Just wanted some guidance on changing the IMEI on the Samsung Galaxy S phones, including the Nexus S (i9020). Or any suggestions on how I could avoid my carrier from seeing my IMEI number and thus forcing me into a more expensive data plan.

Help would be appreciated!
