Wink Install KitKat 4.4.1 KOT49E OTA on Nexus 5 And Root It

Install KitKat 4.4.1 KOT49E OTA on Nexus 5 And Root It

Google’s latest Nexus flagship, the Nexus 5 was released in November 2013 carrying a True HD-IPS display running Quad-core 2.3 GHz Krait 400 chipset and Quad-core 2.3 GHz Krait 400 CPU, turns out to be one of the best and powerful devices of the year. It comes with the magical taste of KitKat 4.4 out-of-the-box and hey! it just received its first OTA update and turns out to be KitKat 4.4.1 (KOT49E). We already wrote on How to Install KitKat 4.4.1 KOT49E OTA on Nexus 4 And Root It and now comes the turn of the Nexus 5. Not all of you might have got the update notifications yet and also no one can predict how much more time it would take to reach you, so why take chances and why be patient. We’ll guide you through the procedure, so just stick your back to your chair, have your PC in front of you, USB cable and your Nexus 5 in your hands. Lets start!
Warning!

  • Rooting voids warranty, DroidViews or any of its community members do not encourage rooting and are not responsible for any damage to your device. Perform everything at your own risk.
  • Perform all actions on your own risk
  • This guide is meant only and only for Nexus 5, do not attempt to try this on any other device
  • Read and understand the instructions carefully before proceeding below
Prerequisites

  • Install Android SDK: Download
  • Backup device storage, SMS, contacts, calenders and other stuff (This procedure won’t wipe any of your present data on the phone, but we prefer to be at a safe side, always)
Note: In case you already have your bootloader unlocked and a Custom Recovery Installed, you might just push the appropriate OTA update file to your device’s storage. Then, reboot into custom recovery mode, flash the very same zip and reboot your device. Kindly make sure not to wipe anything.
Instructions

  1. Download the OTA update file (7ed504f678cea49ecf0974e8cd956e2974e3f943.signed-hammerhead-KOT49E-from-KRT16M.7ed504f6.zip): Click Here
  2. Reboot your device into official recovery mode: Power off your device, press Volume Down and Power button, the device will reboot into bootloader mode. Use the volume keys to highlight Recovery Mode and press the power button to select it. You will see an Android bot with exclamation mark, press volume up and power button for a second to boot your Nexus 4 into official recovery mode. Booting into stock recovery could be tricky sometimes and may require 2-3 tries.
  3. Once the device enters stock recovery mode, connect it to the PC via USB cable
  4. Use the volume keys to highlight apply update from ADB and select it using the power button
  5. Open the folder location where the OTA update file was downloaded. Press shift key and right click on an empty space inside the folder and select Open Command Prompt Here.
  6. Type the following command to start the updating process:adb sideload 7ed504f678cea49ecf0974e8cd956e2974e3f943.signed-hammerhead-KOT49E-from-KRT16M.7ed504f6.zip
  7. The process will begin. Once its done, you’ll be prompted. Now select reboot system now to finally boot your Nexus 5 into the latest update of KitKat i.e 4.4.1 KOT49E build.
Enjoy the first KitKat update on your Nexus 5 beast!
Rooting

The process requires unlocked bootloader and a Custom Recovery installed. You can root and install CWM or TWRP recovery on your Nexus 5 by following this guide.
Unlocking the bootloader wipes the complete device data including the storage, so back it up all before proceeding.
  1. Download the latest SuperSU flashable package: Download
  2. Connect your device to the PC via USB cable and transfer the UPDATE-SuperSU-vXXX.zip (here XXX resembles the latest version) to an apt location on your device’s storage
  3. Disconnect your device
  4. Power off. Now press Volume down and power button altogether until you see the bootloader screen. Use the volume (+ or -) keys to highlight Recovery Mode and select it using the power button. The device will boot itself into CWM recovery.
  5. Tap on Install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sdcard and select the UPDATE-SuperSU-vXXX.zip (here XXX resembles the latest version). Tap on Yes, when prompted to initiate the flashing process.
  6. Once done, tap on Reboot System Now to reboot your device.
To confirm and cross check if your Nexus 5 is rooted properly, use the following App.
