I just unlocked MB501 today after hours of struggling.

enable usb debuging then install 2ndinit from google market restart phone while the led goes blue press volume down phone should go to recovery mode do wipe factory reset wipe cache also select a zip file at your choice either CM7 or MIUI if your choice goes for CM7 flash gapps after
phone will restart after wait until it finishes root phone with superoneclick then install Root_Explorer.apk on device unzip bp_unlock.zip to root of your sdcard with the help of root explorer copy the file to distination directory i suggest to copy file one by one and paste theme in appropriate system root
system\bin\bp_ptc
system\bootmenu\2nd-init\init.mapphone_umts.rc
remember to switch to R/W access
if everythings goes fine put any simcard in phone restart it you will have and unlocked phone

I was facing problems to do this like cant mound sdcard and its was not going to install custom ROM C7, so first I followed the procedure here
[ROM] Motorola Defy MB525 Cool&Clean v.2.6 by trinacre - xda-developers
then rooted phone with superoneclick, installed 2ndinit then followed the procedure mentioned above, surprisingly it was all Ok.
