i was have the same problem
fix:
you have two ram in your lap top remove one of them and boot your device
create new password from firmware password utility
put your ram again boot with the new password
you can remove it
sorry for my bad english

That is not working with the newer macbooks ( from 2010 ).

The longer boot time is because you need to clean the ME region in the chip itself. Otherwise its gonna be hella slow. Why? CPU and mac EFI ( BIOS or whatever ) , make a handshake so if your chip is not cleaned out that region it means you have a corrupted efi for other mac computers.
