First, What you want to do in Visual studio. Because Visual studio(Ultimate) is a complete set of compiler. Its consists of VB/VB C#/VB C++/.NET and much more.

So first decide what you want to do in Visual studio.
Visual Studio is not an good option to start. If you was a totally newbee in programming then you must have to start from CODEBLOCKS/JAVA.

i read the book "visual c++ 6.0" to get started. Forums have served only to solve specific problems. Today, i almost gave up using it. because it is important for me that the program worked on both systems, linux and windows

why he can't start by using visual studio ???? basics are the same for all languages....language is just a personal choice.....except some cases for which some laguages are limited...Like GPU coding.

i think good a decade ago... its non-standard & no garbage collection.... better use the latest one, mfc 2010 or c#.

to use it now is unproductive, except i guess for maintaining legacy codes

I'm low level programmer and for standalone onepass app is perfect for me.
