I have experienced problems with AMD processors and some LPT dongle - based programs, a pentium III/4 is a safer bet.

    hi friend.

you just advised people to make the biggest mistake.

if one wants to use DIV with NT/XP/2K, be sure to verify the following:
    - you have a file "NTPORTIO.SYS" in the very same directory as the main executable is.
    - you are NOT RUNNING USERPORT.

    why?
    simple.
80x86 systems since 386 have the maybe well-known protected mode. nothing new here, win98 is utilising the same mode to run.
it has 4 levels of privilege, ranged from 0 to 3.
they are not all used, level 0 (lamers call it ring0) is used by kernel-level drivers and all the kernel code itself, level 3 (same but ring3) is used for user applications.
however, in NT, another feature is used, that is, the OS itself can restrict application level (3) access to physical devices, forcing them to use the (any) API to communicate with them.
this is done by IOPM (I/O Permission Map).
it is a bitmap, one bit per port. if the bit states allowed access, the I/O (in particular: IN, OUT, INSB, INSW, INSD, OUTSB, OUTSW, OUTSD assembly instructions) action is performed, if not, an exception is called notifying the host system (usually the operating system) that the program requested access to hardware, and in NT, it is handled in usual Microsoft way: "access denied".

userport is a program that installs a kernel-leve driver (level 0), which changes this IOPM upon request.

ntportio.sys is actually the same as userport.sys.
upon execution, DIV tries to start its own userport.sys, thus giving access to certain ports (here: 0x378-0x37F) to user programs (here: programs running on privilege level 3).
but it won't care why, if the driver failed to install (even if because it is already loaded), it will show up the "CANNOT START WIN-NT LOW LEVEL" sh_t.

so while you use DIV, please disable/remove the OTHER userport which you otherwise will likely need to use for LPT-based solutions not implementing this div-like halfway done feature.
