It's a rather cool thing to be able to connect the phone to computer with console cable and see a lot of debug info.

Some inspirational information has been found on some Russian site -- a sample ARM (TAE firmware) debug log for T610 is provided there.

How-to:

plain USB-to-serial PL-2303 data cables (which can be converted) can be used (you can also try the other USB chips or simple COM cable);
connect pins 9 and 11 together as in the service cable;
to get the ARM (TAE firmware) debug logs, Rx and Tx lines should be connected to pins 4 and 5 respectively (as in data cable);
to see the AVR (MS firmware) debug logs, you should connect Rx and Tx lines to the pins 6 and 7 (as in the service cable);
thus, it's good to have the switches on the cable;
connect your cable to the computer and start your favorite terminal emulation program (Putty, Hyperterminal, Screen, Minicom, Cutecom etc.);
as for my T630, working connection settings are: 115200 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity and no flow control;
turn off the phone and connect the cable to it;
the phone should start up automatically with a lot of debug info in the console;
enjoy!

Seems it's not possible to send the commands from terminal to the phone with consumer firmware, but the ability of reading "bootlogs" is also great.
The only commands you can send to your phone are modem commands in the normal "modem/data" mode.

AVR debug logging works even when the phone screen is black after power-on attempt; sometimes if a critical error occurs, it begans to hexdump the flash contents to the terminal.

Don't know about the new phones, but it should work in all phones with old 11-pin connectors.
