Up until now I thought the only solution was a BB chip replacement then I saw this on another forum.

It's a sim card solution and still means a tether but gives us hope that things are still happenning. I can't vouch that it actually works. YABACH.COM is the seller of the sim ($25). Somebody here might know them.

Well now I am a bit suspicious of the whole thing. The person that posted the "solution" at m0dmyi is named JakeBar and I notice the web page at yabach is designed by Jacob Bar. That indicates some tie-up to me between the seller and the poster. Damn! I've asked the question at the original forum. I'll let you know what comes of it.

I have a reply. I am going to try this as it's only $25 and sounds genuine. Here is the answer I got as to whether the poster has a vested interest in the sim card:

well yes and i only made a few of this at this time some for myself and some to sell, i can guarantee you that its working, if you guys want me to make a new video showing something that will prove more that this is real please say so. this is real and its working.

He's been a member of the other forum for a number of years so not a "fly by night" type of guy. It'll be a week or so before it gets here. I'll post back as soon as I can.
