Using qmat and looking for the unlock code did do the trick.
1. Check the first post in this thread to get the qmat file.
2. Open it in a hex editor (like hexedit.exe) and find bytes 32 F4 02 32 F5 49.
3. The unlock code will stare you in the face (8 digit number, look at the ascii site of things

)
4. Use the virgin unlock tool to enter the code, and kaboom - unlocked

Just to put things Clear and to avoid confusion, at the very beginning of this tread QMAT was necessary to develop the program that ***** already made, now QMAT is not needed anymore, go to this link ----> *****'s Blog and download the program he made, fallow the instructions as ***** posted on his page, and you will have your modem unlocked in just 15 secs.

For E5838, the searching bytes is 54 F4 91 54 F4 61. I did it for 2 E5838 wifi modem successfully.

Yeah, tried that, didn't work. Using the manual method and the Virgin unlock tool it did work. Your tool did report success but I could not use another SIM. After the manual method I could. Check my earlier post at HUAWEI E5830 Unlock *HERE* it includes a link to a dump (maybe it helps you)
