Motorola L6i - Need Unlock Code!

Don't know if this is the right place to ask, but I really need to know if there is a code that will unlock my L6i. I got it for an upcoming trip to Africa. However, it comes from Mobal Communication and their rates to call anywhere are super high. I want to be able to use local sim cards when I get to Africa. If I unlock the phone, I assume I could do that. Is there a free way to unlock it? How can I get the code to do this? Are there any instructions on how to do it? Thanks for helping a newbie.

I connected the phone. Computer shows device connected and working.
Ran Imode reader
Shows connected on Com3 but when attempts to read says "not able to read"
One other com port shows connected but returns the message "timeout".
Don't know if I'm not doing something correctly.

O.K. Looks like that is what I have to do! Any suggestions as to who is trustworthy and fast & cheap (as you said)? I don't want to disable the phone and may want to use the SIM card that came with the phone or any other SIM that I may want to purchase while in Africa. Any suggestions as to who would be best would be appreciated.

O.K.- tried that. All I get when I try and hold * and enter any number is "emergency calls only". It won't accept any numbers. Must be doing something wrong still.
