orange refused unlock...need help plzz - GSM-Forum

i had sent Orange of UK an email to unlock my LG KE970 (Shine) they said it would cost 20 Pounds (which is almost 40 US Dollars). they told me to leave a number and that they would forward the email to their unlocking department. I then wrote them back thanking them for their reply and assistance but i told them i wasn't and orange member and i gave them my home number instead to contact me.
they then said...

I can advise that all Orange phones are locked so that they can only be used on
the Orange network. Orange customers can have any handset unlocked to use on
any compatible network. Once a handset has been unlocked it can be used with an
Orange SIM and / or any compatible network SIM.

I can advise that in order to unlock an Orange phone, the phone must be
registered to an account on the Orange network and we would need to speak to the
account holder for security reasons.

what am i going do now?
can i just become an orange member by purchasing a sim and then get my phone unlocked then cancle my service with them?

i really need help. they can unlock my phone but the phone isnt on a contract. help please!!!
