* AN IDIOTS GUIDE TO… *

* Flashing Samsung SGH-E715 to Samsung SGH-E710 firmware *
* Backing up E715 firmware and re-flashing with E715 firmware *

* INDEX *

- Introduction
- Pros and Cons
- What you require
- Where to get these files
- Notes
- Step by Step
- Backing up your E715 firmware
- Re-Flashing with E715 Firmware
- Troubleshooting
- Credits

* Introduction:

This is a small idiots guide on how I personally flashed my E715 with the help and suggestions from various people on Howard Forums (www.howardforums.com)

Please note the flashing of the phone requires you to use the EXACT firmware listed. Using other firmware may or may not work. Try those at your own risk.

* Pros and Cons (Why should I bother?):

Before undertaking the operation you should take into account if it is worth your while or not. Below are a few things that will change once this has been carried out.

- Phone will become "Vodafoneised", all graphics etc turn into vodafone and colour scheme will change to
be in the red vodafone style.
- Phone numbers no longer formatted in American format (ie, 1-800-666-6666 will now display in European/international standard 18006666666) – This does not effect dialling in any way.
- WAP/GPRS settings revealed easily and easily accessible.
- Extra languages, many more European languages available
- Video record option added, allowing 25 second "short films" to be made, with sound!
- Frequency band will change from 900/1900 to 900/1800
- ALL downloaded backgrounds/ringers and phone stored messages will be lost.

With the effect of the band changing this may make this operation useless for north american users. If you
reside in north america and use a mobile network that can use the 900/1800 frequency then this will work
for you. If not then your phone may not get any reception at all.

* What you require:

Samsung SGH-E715
Data Cable (E715, V205, S300 etc OEM data cable will work)
Optiflash 3.6.0.4
Samsung E715 firmware file
V200 IMEI Changer (for unlocking)

* Where to get these files:

E710 firmware - http://home.arcor.de/moovie/samsung/..._soundless.rar
or http://cuc.bc-host****/aviworld/samsu...e/E71BUWL2.rar

Optiflash 3.6.0.4 - http://www.gsm.com.vn/ezupload/files/2004-01-08/OptiFlash3.6%20(NEW).zip
or http://home.comcast.net/~jonathantopping/optiflash.rar
or http://cuc.bc-host****/aviworld/samsu...flash_3604.rar

V200 IMEI Changer - http://www.gsmcn.com/downloads/v200imei.rar
or http://cuc.bc-host****/aviworld/samsu...EI-changer.rar
or http://www.chris.tp/V200IMEIchanger.rar

* Notes:

The data cable I used was one that I purchased off ebay for the V200, it is an OEM "original" samsung data cable that also came with EasyGPRS software. It would also be possible to use the Mobile Action USB data cable for the V200 (www.mobileaction.com)

If you own the original OEM Samsung cable a small rubber piece on the cable needs to be removed and the data flow set to “D/L”.

(NOTE: At all costs please try not to abort this operation half way through either by removing the cable in panic or switching
anything off, if something doesn’t seem right it is better to let the operation finish or you could damage your phone.)

* Step – By – Step:

1) Switch off your phone and remove your simcard.

2) Replace the battery. Leave the phone turned off!

3) Go to the directory of Optiflash3.6/ and run the program “Optiflash”

4) Goto the menu and select Options -> Settings.

5) Change the COM port to the one your cable is connected to. Mine was COM port 1. The max transfer speed should automatically be
set to 115200, if not change it to that. (You can find out which COM port its connected to when you use EasyGPRS, as it’s the port
that works and your phone connects to.)

6) Press the “Generic” tab at the top of the screen.

7) Under “Specify Hardware Platform” in the drop down box select “Samsung T1, E710”

8) If "differences only" has been ticked then untick it. The other three tick boxes should also be unticked.

9) Click the tab “Flash & Verify”

10) Browse to find the file “E710 Ultimate Mod - by SmokinSungha” or whichever E710 firmware name you are using.
(It should be located where you have extracted the files to.)

Make sure the reserved memory regions are blank

11) Press the OK button to return to the main Optiflash screen.

12) Press the FLASH button.

It should have some progress bars and then tell you to Power on.

Attach the phone to the data cable and keep hold of the power button for a few seconds. The phone will now flash. A progress bar
will chart the progress of the operation. This should take between 16 and 25 minutes. If the phone turns on then either the COM
port is not set correctly or there is some other reason why no connection is being made.

13) A message “all is well” should be displayed. Disconnect the phone from the cable.

Quit Optiflash.

Remove the battery. Leave the phone for a few seconds and then reattach the battery.

14) Switch the phone on still without simcard and do the following. (You will have to keep your finger on the power on button for
longer than normal, keep hold until the phone switches on. If it doesn’t switch on, remove the battery and replace it and leave the
phone for a few more minutes then keep hold of the power button until the phone turns on)

If your phone works with your sim card skip the unlocking piece.

It should say “falsche karte”. Attach the phone (switched on) to your data cable again and run the V200 IMEI program. Your phone must
be plugged into COM1 for this program. Press "Write IMEI". Then on the new window press "unlock" on the bottom right hand side, a
few messases will come up and then "PASS" will appear in the top corner. Your phone is now 100% unlocked.

Quit the program and remove the cable. Switch your phone off and then back on. Type in the following codes one at a time.

*2767*MEDIA# <====*2767*63342#
*2767*FULL# <====*2767*3855#
*2767*CUST# <====*2767*2878#
*2767*WAP# <====*2767*927#

After entering each code the phone will reset.

15) After the last code the phone will reset and boot back up, you now have a brand new Samsung E710.

* Backing up your E715 firmware:

If you are worried about damaging your phone you can backup your current firmware from your phone.

1) Load OptiFlash.

2) Goto Options->Settings->Com Port and choose the COM port your cable is connected to.

3) Click on the READ tab.

4) In the input box under “READ RANGES” type the following;

0x00000000 - 0x00001fff

click Add Region

then type;

0x00004000 - 0x00ffffff

click Add Region

5) Under Save File press browse and select a directory and file name to save your firmware file to.

6) Press OK to return to the main OptiFlash screen and click read.

7) Press Read and some progress bars will go by quickly and then you are told to power on phone.

8) Attach your data cable and press the power button. Make sure the battery is attached or if not then the power cable is attached
on the OEM cable.

* Re-Flashing with E715 Firmware:

If you can not use the E710 firmware after flashing to it or find you dont like how it works then you can always flash back to
the E715 firmware, this is the same process as listed for the E710 but choose the E715 firmware.

* Troubleshooting

There are a few basics which sometimes go wrong and people continue to do these over and over again, if you are having problems
check the following,

- Make sure you are using Windows XP

- Make sure you are using the correct firmware files, dont try use S300 firmware on an E715

- Try to use an OEM cable

- Make sure the cable is plugged into the right port which it is using in Optiflash

- Try flicking the switch on the OEM cable between D/L and DATA.
