Does anyone know how to restore it??
I have the exact same problem due to the iphone crashing...... heavily!

The phone was in recovery mode when I got to it but before working on it, I put it on charge for an hour. When I came back, the USB 'plug into Itunes' screen had gone and instead it appeared to be running a (kernal) script but had frozen with the last line saying :

panic: we are hanging here

I've ran blackrain, I have tried many different itune versions as well as typing /sbin/fsck -y (in order to reset the phones scripting) through Terminal under a new shell as it would logout automatically because of a bus error. In other words I have done most things including going for the direct route ie hitting restore to update to 3.1.3 but no, stays in recovery mode and chucks out a few error codes 1601,1604(being the main one), 2001.

Sooo, yeah ... anyone got any pointers?
