Apple Watch pairing questions

So have in hand a Series 4 Nike GPS only. I am able to pair to a iPhone X and it asks for update to WatchOS 6.X.X something. My question is: if I am able to get this far (paired) can/do these watches prompt for iCloud credentials? The watch is unknown whereabouts history. Will update WatchOS ask watch original user account?

Thanks guys and gals!

You are correct. Using latest watchOS it did not allow successful pairing though. When i connected to a family members iphone BEFORE the update to WatchOS 6.x on OS 3.x it asked for Update to begin using.
