I recently purchased both, and they work great. unfortunately we decided as a company to go a different route (just purchase new screens and sell old ones to a refurbisher)

Series 0 42mm (A1554 NJ3T2LL/A)
Watch boots to Apple logo for a few seconds, then nothing. Holding Crown and Side buttons reboots to logo again, but after a few seconds it shuts off as before.

I was able to force the Watch into DFU, after that I restored to 4.2 using iBus S1 and MFC Dongle... Now it works!

Series 3 42mm GPS (not LTE)

Watch arrived with broken digitizer glass. Removed the Light Sensor from the broken Display and transplanted it onto a S2 Display. Installed the Frankenstein-ed Display and everything works except Force Touch. Tried the original S3 Display and Force Touch works. I know that the Force Touch sensor is not part of the Display so I think this is another example of firmware compatibility issues, so I decide to re-flash the Watch with the Frankenstein Display installed.

Reflashed using iBus S2 + MFC and now Force Touch works!

So it looks like, provisionally, S2 Displays can be used to repair S3 Watches.

I have NOT tested NFC. The NFC hardware is part of the Light Sensor assembly and there are two solder points under this assembly; I expect these are probably connections for the NFC antenna. I'll have to figure out how to solder them to the transplanted module.

I've seen some reports, all old, that the LTE antenna is integrated into the S3 Display. I think this might not be the case, for a couple of reasons: First, the antenna assembly in the S3/GPS model looks very different from the antenna assembly in the S3/LTE. Second, I don't see anything that looks like RF cabling or connectors between the mainboard and the Display on S3/LTE Watches..

you are correct, the LTE antenna is on the gps/antenna assembly.

apple kind of stretched the truth a bit.. that antenna does kind of touch the glass, so i guess that makes the display an antenna right?

You can't. There is no timeline. There is no guarantee that it will ever be released.

Today I successfully tested a modified S2 display on a S3 watch, including NFC.

I use an xacto 17 blade to remove the NFC modules from the S2 and broken S3 displays. Then I put the S3 module on the S2 display using conductive ink to make the electrical connections for the antennas and then superglue for strength. Reflashed with iBus S2 + MFC Dongle. Paired with an iPhone 6+, iOS 11.2. Loaded a credit card into Apple Pay on the watch. Opened the "CardTest" app on an Android phone. Double-clicked the Side Button to activate Apple Pay as though I was about to make a purchase, then tapped the Android phone to the watch & saw all the NFC data coming across.

I don't think there's anything special about the conductive ink, but I used what was lying around, which was from a rear-window defogger repair kit. Any conductive ink should be OK. Maybe even Z-tape would work.

Just verified today that Z-tape does work. Makes the process much easier, too. Just make sure not to put the tape over the Light Sensor
