9300 Network problem

I have a Nokia 9300 that I bought offline. It was said to be sim unlocked for any gsm network. I checked with my network provider (cellular one) if the phone would be supported and was told it should be ok. After inserting a sim card into the phone and turning it on I found It has no reception (on my other nokia a 6126 I get full reception). When i go into the settings and try to change the network to manual selection It reads "no network found" and then returns to automatic. I thought maybe my provider lied to me so i used my friends cingular\at&t card only to get the same message with no recption..the prior owner said they used it with cingular with no problems. I don't know how to test the phone or even what could be wrong with it. Does anyone have any ideas it runs on a symbian operating system which i am very new to. I read alot of the network problem threads before posting this one so I am not making this a run of the mill thread I would like to know how to test it if nothing else.
