Is flashing the phone possible without JAF box?Then what does PKEY_EMULATOR DOES ?

I am a novice in flashing the software of cellphones.But i have a good working knowledge with computers. After a lot of study i understood the Operating system(termed as flash files) in cellphones can be re-installed using flash boxes like JAF, UFS, MT-Box and many... Now my questions are :

1.What is the use of Phoneix and Diego softwares from NOKIA ? Can we flash the software of the nokia phone using its respective data cable itself ? Then does that mean it obsoletes the need for JAF(or any other flasher)?

2. Recently i found another tool named PKEY EMULATOR, does it emulate a real JAF box itself, if so when i first installed JAF software(without connecting a JAF box) and then installed PKEY EMULATOR it insists for a DONGLE. I understood that it is also a kind of hardware which works along with this JAF box,

Here what i need is, is there any emulator for this dongle too. so that i need not purchase a JAF box and this dongle too.

I would be more than happy if some one could answer my questions, as i am in desperate need of it.
