Problemn with Nokia 5230

It draws a high current on stand by, 80 times more than it should.

The bater runs flat in a few hours and it should give about 480 hours.

Energy profiler show it to use about 0.25 amps or 0.8 watts in stand by
and also it only lasts as long as you would expect for something drawing about 0.25 amps.

It should be drawing about 0.003 amps according to my calculations.

I have tried the obvious stuff to lower energy and done a hard reset by 2 methods but no real change.

Seems may a fault on the phone or a virus or a bad update??

Please help!!!

Hello boys and girls!!!!

I am not sure whether I feel elated or stupid!!

I have had this problem for age over a year anyway and tried everything, at least I thought I had anyway.

Anyhow I just though I would have one last go at going through the menus
and I stumbled into the 'location' application and found all the positioning methods were switched on!!

I though I would turn them off and see if that helped!!!

And did it help??!! Yes it did!!!

Even when I turned them off I could tell the phone felt a bit cooler.

I went back into the energy profiler after the screen had blacked out for a while and had a look at the readings.
It had dropped right down to, I estimate, about 0.07 watts.

But unfortunately it has now gone back up to about 1 watt

Oh well it was good while it lasted.

I wonder if maybe some server went down for a short while?

Well I am technical enough to believe that highly unlikely any repair would be cost effective. Do you know anyone who would do a cost effective repair?

You have to remember I am in the UK, a repair might be cost effective there but I doubt it would here, so I would have to send it to India which would cost, plus I do not think it would be a good idea because they might not be able to repair it, plus I can get by as it is until I get a new phone.
I do not like the phone much because it is hard to stop it making chargeable calls without you knowing. The camera is good though.

Anyhow I kind of doubt it is a short circuit, I think it would be peculiar to get a short circuit which drew almost exactly the same current/wattage as when the phone was in use for talking.

Incidentally can anyone here supply me with the figures for the current draw when a call is being made, or at least the range into which those figures would fall.

I guess I could find out myself by making a call, but that would cost me lol

Will have to wait until someone calls me

But surely some of the folks here know the figures?

Also I have seen a number of people reporting pretty much the same problem, so do they all have the same fault?

I took it apart last night to have a look inside, it seemed
to look OK, but when I put it back together it was dead.

Seems I broke it

However I had anther go at putting it back together and this time it worked.

Maybe the fact I was sober helped.

I still have to put the plastic slider back in as I forgot that (deliberately),
but at lest I will not have to undo any connections to get it back in.

Personally I do not think there is a problem with the hard ware, my problems seem very typical.

Here are a selection of comment I found about the phones battery life from 2010.

Quote:
I have nokia 5230 which has been sent to service center thrice for battery issue.
Problem is my device is power hungry, when monitored over Energy profiler it uses 60ma current in standby mode and 165 ma when screen is on.
This is when no apps are running. I had updated firmware too, factory reset also tried... Set it to use 2G and less then 30 % of brightness but no luck.
nokia had replaced battery twice but since this issue is not with battery.. Is there any way to get around this...
Theoretically speaking it should not consume more then 10 to 15 ma in standby... Guess there should be issue with hardware.
Its horrible that my device does not last for a day in standby with no use of any application.

Quote:
I have the same, but even worse issue, i am using email on the phone and the batterylife is less than a day, does any user use the email? How much time last your battery? Thanks

Quote:
Seems to be a real problem with 5230, got it as a gift from a friend from Hongkong and the battery life is totally useless if you use email quite frequently.
Quote:
My battery gets short life too, it became worse and worse. Yesterday I charge my 5230 full and it is dead this moring. I don't know how long is the warranty for battery?

Quote:
I have a major problem with battery in Nokia 5230 too. Was okay to start with (1st year it would do 3 to 4 days) then it started going from 4 bars battery to flat in about 30mins. Have done everything incl reset, etc, but to no avail. I suspect there may be a problem in the software as this is a very common problem in the 5230. Would love someone to offer a solution. If not, it will definately be my last Nokia (incl my wifes 5230 too).

I have *never* seen anyone report solving the problem - says a lot does it.

Personally I think the battery lasts a while when you first get it, but as you install stuff on it it gets worse and worse.
The trouble is you cannot install some stuff, I have tried it. It says installed and it removes the file, but when you check
the application is still there, as the file is removed you cannot 'uninstall' it again.

"The trouble is you cannot install some stuff"
above, should read

"The trouble is you cannot *uninstall* some stuff".

I am pretty sure it is a software issue, something is running on the phone, I would go as far to say these phones are designed to do to this.

The changes of a phone have a short circuit that allowed to phone to still function are rather slim in my opinion.
Electrical devices either work or they don't, the si not much in between.

And example is when I dismantled the phone and put it back together, it had a fault, but it was not a fault which drew another 1 watt. It was a fault with killed the phone.
So it's all or nothing.

For ".:SARCAR:." to say I am a non-technical person is true to a certain extent, I am not a technician, I am an engineer, I have a degree in electronic engineering!!!

Still no solution.

I guess the solution is to never touch a Nokia product again.
