hello m8s

if u went into using oscilloscope , then frequency counter is not needed cause frequency of signal can be calulated as Frequency = 1/period.

kind regards

if u want to know the value precisely and get simple ( no need to calculate ) so frequency counter still needed

@ y2y

am not saying that frequency counter not needed in repair in case u dont have oscilloscope ,
& due to topic name which is if oscilloscope the best equipment in repair ,
i said that if u have oscilloscope u wont need a frequency counter cause u can calculate freq from signal
& by the way since digital oscilloscopes are found , frequency calculation & many measurmnets are auto calculated
& presented on screen so no need to spend much time anymore .

kind regards

Oscillo scope will certainly make u look more professional and may be u will repair a few more mobiles but what I would like to know from professional exp of ppl here is.. is it economically viable in terms of time and money to use it?. it might make u cool among ur peers if u use it.. but for a normal techie who needs to earn his money by the end of the day.. if he has to work on one phone for long time without proper returns ( as u can see the cost of mobiles are getting cheaper and cheaper by the day and only vialble things are high end mobiles and most of the customers prefer company outlets ). Can u let me know

You are right.I have Oscilloscope.I used it in 3310 era.then mobile was not so common and price was also high and test bed were available for phones where U can put board and and display on test bed and check with Oscilloscope.now I have no time to use Oscilloscope.it is lying idle.

With the multimeter Mastech MS8220T available online can measure Volts, Current, Resistance (upto 60M), Frequency upto 60MHz (so you can test all crytals on the PCB), Capacitance and temperature (with a probe upto 1000 degrees centigrade). The temperature function can be used for BGA rework. And the best part is it can communicate with a PC. All this for just USD 79 on sites like multimeter warehouse. Sounds like a dream and am considering getting one. Sure cheap oscilloscopes are available for a bit more, but none can check frequencies upto 60MHz at that price.

For those interested in a low cost hand held oscilloscope you can google DSO nano. Its a digital storage scope that fits in your pocket with 1MHz bandwidth for just 89 USD.
