For the unlock it is only important what baseband (modem) version you have. You probably have 5.13.04 (included in firmware 4.0.2) and that's the highest version for 3GS that can be unlocked. May sure you never update the baseband. To unlock, you need to jailbreak first. What you can do:
- Remain on 4.0.2 and jailbreak with limerain or greenpoison
- Update to 4.1 without updating the baseband using redsn0w (a little tricky) and jailbreak. Only possible with shsh for 4.1.
Later install ultrasn0w from Cydia to unlock.
For firmware 4.2.1 there is no untethered jailbreak available yet, so stay away from that.
Even if you don't jailbreak, make sure you backup shsh regularly with TinyUmbrella tool, to be able to downgrade firmware later or upgrade not to the latest version or reinstall firmware that is not the newest firmware.

i tried for iphone 3gs 16gb, in windows 7 with itunes 9.2 (64bit).. but didn't worked.. can any please help me..?
