Bought 3gs used on 5.0.1....need tto unlock and jailbreak...help? - GSM-Forum

I bought this 3gs on ebay.
He had previously loaded 5.0.1 as thats what came on it. He says he saved blobs but I don't have them and hope I dont need them.

I use Tmobile so i need to unlock and jailbreak.
I prefer to stayt on ios 5.0.1 unless theres a major reason not to.

Version: 5.0.1 (9A405)
Model: MC135LL
serial: xx001PSxxxx
imei startts with 01 216.....
firmware: 05.16.05

I assume its new bootrom but i dunno how to check and not sure what the boot rom is.

I need to get unlocked for tmobile and need to go to ipad baseband 6.15 to unlock I think.

Can I do the 6.15 baseband update directly from 5.0.1?
Can I somehow install cydia and jailbreak?
I used redsnow on my old 3g.....is there a redsnow I can use right from my 5.0.1 rtto do the baseband update/unlock/jailbreak?

Must I do those in a certain order?
Please help as there is too much info out there.

I downloaded the file and checked.
As I thought, mine was week 01 of 2010 so its OK to update the baseband.

With that said, what do I need to use to update the baseband first?
Should that be done first?

I'd like to just stay on IOS 5.0.1 if thats ok.
I understand that I'll have a tethered unlock or is it tethered jailbreak, but since I so rarely turn my phone off that doesn't seem like such a bad thing.

Can I use a version of redsnow to do the baseband?
Can I stay on IOS 5.0.1?

Ok, If I'm reading correctly in other threads I can keep 5.0.1
I need to either download redsnow 9.9b6, or maybe snowbreeze 2.8b10?? (Which do i need and whats the difference?)

Then I download the Ipad 6.15 baseband and run one of the two programs above....

I also apparently need to download an IPSW file? It reads like I need to get 5.0?? Even though I'm currently on 5.0.1???? That seems odd.

Then I run the redsnow or snowbreeze, show it the IPSW file, and then go into the baseband update mode? and let it flash it??

NOTE: The page about snowbreeze 2.8b10 reads like it only works for 5.0 beta. Does it work for 5.0.1 like I have?

Questions:
1. It says if you need to unlock then do not go to 5.0.1
I am already on 5.0.1 and I thought if I update my baseband I CAN unlock with 5.0.1. Is that correct or no?
2. That link doesn't clarify the baseband update. Do I do that before I jailbreak or after?
2 B. Can I update the baseband while it stays on 5.0.1 like it is now?
3. What is definition of jailbreak? What is definition of unlock. Which comes first?

I'm not sure how this helps, but that link on rapidshare worked to get the checker file.

I know I have to boot tethered, but that doesn't seem like an issue IF thats the ONLY issue. There is also the semitethered add on that could be helpful.

The only thing it does not say is whether I can update my baseband while in 5.0.1 Is THAT a problem?

Why do you say 5.0.1 can't be unlocked when the info there says yes? I have a 3GS remember.

yes you can..but only with this supported basebands:
01.59.00
04.26.08
05.11.07
05.12.01
05.13.04
06.15.00

yours:05.16.05...

so i would check .shsh.. so you can downgrade to 4.3.3 then make an untethered jailbreak and update to 6.15.00 baseband... now you will have an unlock and untethered jailbreak 3GS

Ok I am also interested to know if this is really possible. A customer brought in a 3GS updated to IOS 5.0.1 I am also assumeing that the BaseBand is aso updated (the phone is not activated). Can the baseband be still downgraded to for unlocking and jailbreak for IOS 5.0.1?
